Finding the Perfect Tree

Last Sunday it was time for our annual Christmas tree hunting extravaganza! We had high hopes as the last two years our trees have been terrible. They were the usual sparseness that Colorado trees have to offer, but they were also very weak, barely holding more than one ornament per branch. Maybe that's exaggerating, but pretty close to the truth. I've been very tempted to take down the tree and go get one from a grocery lot!

However, for our family, it's a tradition to get a tree from the US Forest Service and we do love the experience. So with determination, we joined two other families to find some great trees for our homes.

Photobucket
We first stopped at the ranger station to see if Smokey the Bear was out...even though we don't need to be warned of forest fires at this time of the year. We weren't disappointed.

Photobucket
Got a group pic of my good friends Meaghan, Jenny and I with some of the kids. We each had 3 kiddos who braved the elements. This was not a warm day.

Photobucket
Elly, it's time to leave Smokey and go find a tree...

Photobucket
We all headed out...dad's with sleds, mom's with packs, some kids on snowshoes, some in sleds.

Photobucket
Nate and his buddy Jack on snowshoes.

Mac kept Elly on the sled...

Photobucket
...Sam was pulling.

Photobucket
There were a few spills.

Looking across a trench, Sam thought he might have spotted a grove of trees. Picture Chevy Chase seeing "the tree" in Christmas vacation...this is what Sam was sure he saw. So we all hiked down into the trench, but then let Sam and another dad, Jon, hike up to the other side by themselves since it was getting at least knee deep. We stayed in the trench while the kids played.

Elly and Janelle playing. This was before they got cold. Elly hit a point that she was cold and she wanted to go home. Fortunately, this was also when Sam brought down our tree.

Photobucket
Here's the beauty! Check out all the pine cones, one of the things we love about the Colorado trees! Oh yeah, and this was when Elly had had it.

Photobucket
Sam hiked back up to get some friend's a tree that couldn't make it, and Mac promptly popped the tree on the sled and started pulling it back towards the truck. I tried to tell him that it would be too heavy and we should wait for dad, but he was determined since that was the whole reason he brought his sled. So I got the rope around the tree to keep it on and Mac hauled it out. I was really impressed. He didn't complain, just kept inching in the direction of the truck. Wouldn't even let me help.

Photobucket
Look at this kid work! This reminds me of the poor dog on the "Grinch that stole Christmas!"

Photobucket
Much to Elly's delight, we all made it back to the truck (Mac got some help from another dad to finish the trek), and had some hot cider.

Photobucket
This little elf was also delighted.

Photobucket
It was a quiet trip home.

Photobucket
There it is! I am very happy with this tree. Yes, it's still sparse, but it's not wimpy. It did somehow come crashing down after decorating it Sunday night (a cat might have been involved), and I have yet to get the lights on nice again and all the ornaments back on, but hopefully by Christmas you'll get a view of the finished product.

Happy 4th of July

Photobucket
We just got back from a great visit with friends and family. We spent a couple nights in Lake City with our good friends...can't wait to go back, then time with the Ballards in Telluride over the 4th. Lots of pics...enjoy.

We later went on a hike. It was along a creek, the kids loved it!

Photobucket
At the end of the hike was a waterfall that you could stand in

Photobucket
Elly loved Isaac. I think she thought he was one of her babies she could play with!

Photobucket
Got some zip-lining in

Photobucket
Elly and River listening to some music

Photobucket
We camped with the Ballards just outside Telluride for the 4th.

Photobucket
We made it into Telluride! Great view down Main Street.

Photobucket
Elly and Cade are sure happy! We made matching shirts for the 4th.

Photobucket
These boys are excited to be here!

Photobucket
Waiting for the parade to start

Photobucket
The boys waving their flags with a twinkle in their eye as the parade started with jets flying over head. It was awesome...my favorite part.

Photobucket

Photobucket
Elly liked her spot just fine on Daddy's lap...someday she may be ready to throw elbows for some candy. :)

Photobucket
After the parade, we surprised the kids with stuff to decorate their bikes and make their own parade

Photobucket
Our mini-bike parade!

Photobucket
Got the big boys glow-in-the-dark hats for the big night. Didn't want to lose them!

Photobucket
We were super-excited to find out about watching the fireworks at the base of the gondola and then getting on to watch the grand finale from the gondola. Sweet way to do with little kids!

Photobucket
Quite the fireworks show

Photobucket
We all needed baths, but Nick may have been the happiest with his dirtiness

Photobucket
We had hopes to hike to the base of these waterfalls...but our kids were a bit tired from the 4th, so we settled with a pic.

Photobucket
Elly found a caterpillar along the trail. Gotta have bugs!

Happy Easter...a little late

We started off the day before Easter with our neighborhood Easter egg hunt at a local school and later that day dyed Easter eggs. It was a chilly one...as you can see with the snow! Easter day was great and relaxing. We celebrated Christ's resurrection at church and then had a great meal with friends. Unfortunately, I didn't take any pictures of the kids dressed up (I know....how often do they get dressed up?!), but a friend did at church, so I'll pass on that pic of our dapper and beautiful kids :) when I get it. Here's some pictures of the day before Easter.

Our family pic...we had to search for warm clothes, I had just washed all our ski stuff and it was hanging up to dry.

Photobucket
After naps, we dyed Easter eggs

Photobucket
Fascinating...Elly of course, loved watching her eggs change color.

Photobucket
Mac tie-dyed most of his eggs.

Photobucket
Nate just liked coloring them the old fashioned way.

We hope you had a happy Easter!
